Babies should be sleeping in the same room as their parents for at least six months after they are born. This is according to pediatric specialists (AAP). The AAP also advises that it’s safe for babies to sleep on their backs on a firm surface up until 12 months old.
Where should babies sleep during the first year? To answer that question, we’ll need to review a little bit of history. In the past, it was common for babies to sleep in their parents’ beds during the first year.
This is because moms would breastfeed their children and need them close by at all times. As time went on, though, new studies suggested the potential dangers of co-sleeping with infants (since they may roll onto mom or dad).

Where should the baby sleep for the first few months?
During the first few months of a baby’s life, experts recommend that babies sleep in the same room as their parents.
There are several reasons for this:
1. Many parents will get up several times during the night to breastfeed or comfort the baby back to sleep. This is much easier when they can do so without having to go into another room and disturb anyone else!
2. Breastfeeding moms may need help getting used to feeding on demand and at all hours of the day and night.
3. Babies who don’t feel secure tend not to sleep well, whether it’s because they’re alone or just away from their parents. At least for these initial months, mom and dad sleeping nearby can make everyone more comfortable (and maybe even happier!)
4. It is recommended that babies sleep alone in a crib or on another flat, firm surface until they are at least 1 year old. The AAP advises that babies should not have any pillows, blankets, loose bedding, toys, bumpers or anything else that could obstruct their breathing or cause them to suffocate. Co-sleeping with an infant can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), as well as other risks such as suffocation and strangulation. In addition, sleeping on couches and water beds have been linked to SIDS deaths.
Where should a 1 year old sleep?
Of course, some babies do in fact sleep better in their parents’ bed simply because they are more used to it. Many parents begin nursing or rocking their babies in a loving manner while holding them and they eventually fall asleep together. When this occurs night after night, the baby starts to get into a pattern of falling asleep with mom or dad nearby, even when they’re no longer breastfeeding!
In turn, many mothers develop nighttime routines that include feeding their baby throughout the night. It’s still important for new moms to try and get as much rest as possible during these first few weeks and months after having a baby – but if your little one falls asleep on you at all hours of the day or night, you may need help getting them back to sleep in their own bed.
At what age is co-sleeping safe?
Co-sleeping with a baby is never 100% safe. No matter how young and tiny your child is, there will always be some risk that mom or dad may roll over onto the baby, smother them with a pillow because they’re face down (instead of on their back,) or even accidentally drop them out of bed!
When there is no crib where should the baby sleep?, then the parent’s room is the best place for a newborn to sleep during the day. That said – many paediatricians agree that co-sleeping can be both safe and healthy for babies as long as certain rules are followed. The AAP reports:
“Infants under four months old should not sleep in the same bed with their parents, but appropriate co-bedding arrangements (such as a crib mattress placed directly on the floor) should be made for those older than 4 months old.”
Parents of a child who’s under 4 months old should always place their baby on his back in a crib with no bumpers, toys or pillows. The AAP reports that “the infant should not be placed on a soft sleep surface such as a couch or water bed,” and that “co-sleeping in the parent’s bedroom is safest at this age.”.
What to do if the baby only sleeps on you?
If your little one is used to falling asleep next to you while breastfeeding, rocking or being held – then it will be a good idea to prepare her for sleeping in her own bed. What does this mean? Slowly laying her down on the crib mattress when she’s drowsy but not fully asleep. As she continues resting in the crib alone at night, eventually she should begin to fall asleep on her own and stay that way! It may take several weeks of doing this before the baby starts sleeping through the night by herself, but slowly cutting out these nighttime feedings can make a huge difference for both mom and dad, as well as their sweet child too!
How do I get my baby to stay asleep when I put her down?
If your child is used to falling asleep on you, then gradually laying her down in the crib as she drifts off may take a little bit of time. Every baby is different and it can be hard trying to figure out what’s going on with theirs – that’s why many experts recommend keeping an eye or ear on your child even after he or she has been placed in the crib.
Is there a way to get my newborn to sleep better?
The AAP suggests that parents be wary of sleep training methods that involve letting the baby cry it out. This is because they say these techniques can end up confusing babies and make it harder for them to learn how to fall asleep on their own.
Instead, parents should use approaches like helping teach their children how to soothe themselves back to sleep without any help from mom or dad, even if this means simply laying them down in the crib after feeding during the night.
The AAP adds: “It does not matter when this transfer takes place (i.e., whether it’s 10 pm or 2 am), but consistency with regard to timing is important.” This makes sense because your baby will start learning what her body needs at different times throughout the day if you’re always feeding her at the same time.
It is recommended that babies sleep in the same room as their parents (or caregiver) for at least six months. A child can be moved to his or her own bed, crib, or co-sleeper only when they are ready and not before four months of age.
